I can’t see. My eyes are swollen shut. I have no idea where
I am and I hurt all over. I may even have a few broken ribs.
All I can do is groan.
I’m not sure if anyone can hear me, or if there’s anyone
there to hear me.
I have a deafening ringing in my ears, but I think I can
hear something… rustling perhaps.
I muster what strength I can, and pat the ground with my
hand.
It’s hard, but moist.
Am I lying on something wet? Is it sticky? I hope it’s not
blood.
I groan again and try to open my eyes.
A sliver of light pierces into my skull. I can’t make out
any shapes or colours, just a blinding light.
The rustling sounds as thought it is getting louder.
I try to speak. My jaw screams in pain, but I think I made
some sort of audible noise.
I try with every ounce of will within me to move my body.
My arm, I lift it, first a little, then a little higher.
The pain in my shoulder tears at my will to live.
My memories are beginning to return.
A hill.
A wagon.
A bad idea.
My best friend and his brother pushing me.
I remember screaming.
I remember beginning to roll faster and faster.
I remember a bump
and a rock
and jump
and a tree.
The rustling is clearer now. Someone is shouting my name.
The thin piercing sliver of light darkens.
Someone is standing over me.
I recognize the voice of my best friend Kyle.
“Dude, that was awesome!”
I thought afterwards that I should add one last line .." I may need a new best friend"
I'm sure this, or variations of this happen all the time... I wonder if this may have even happened today somewhere.
